Chapter 6

RAZE HELD his breath as he watched Uriel attempt the impossible. He told himself not to hope for too much, but at the same time, something inside him screamed that Uriel could and would do this.

At first Uriel closed his eyes and became almost abnormally still. A few minutes passed while nothing happened. Then his body went rigid, and he released a small, barely audible gasp. He swayed, and Raze rushed to his side, catching Uriel before the other man could fall.

He was very careful not to touch Uriel’s skin, because the results would have probably been quite disastrous. Already, a slight current of energy was passing through Uriel, and Raze feared that any moment now, he’d be knocked out by the bioenergy.

It didn’t happen. Uriel seemed completely focused on Raze’s father. Lucius’s pulse began to spike, and Julian quickly approached, hovering over the monitors as he got ready to intervene should the worst come to pass.

In Raze’s arms, Uriel started to seize. He was making low whimpering noises that just about broke Raze’s heart. Finally, his body went limp. Well no, that wasn’t exactly accurate. He did lean against Raze, as if by instinct, but at the same time, his hand stuck to the cyber tube, not moving even when Uriel seemed no longer able to support himself on his own two feet.

Raze didn’t know what to look at. He occasionally stole glimpses at the machine and at his father’s face but then quickly focused on Uriel. For the first time, it occurred to him that he’d asked a great deal of the younger man. Uriel himself had admitted to not being very experienced with using his power, and Raze had thrust him into healing a man who hovered at the edge of death. If only he’d thought to go see the Guiding Light sooner. If something happened to either his father or Uriel, it would be solely Raze’s fault.

When Uriel went deathly silent, Raze didn’t know if he should be frightened or relieved. Uriel’s body had now gone as taut as a bowstring, but he kept twitching rhythmically. At one point, Raze realized that each of the twitches followed the rhythm of his father’s heartbeat. Raze wasn’t sure if he should consider that encouraging or not.

He went for “not” when the machines monitoring his father’s condition started beeping alarmingly. In Raze’s arms, Uriel began to writhe, his hand like a claw on the cyber tube.

Logan cursed, rushing to Julian’s assistance as Raze’s brother struggled to stabilize their father’s condition. Raze would have liked to help too, but at the same time, he couldn’t bring himself to let go of Uriel. His head spun, his heart raced, and he’d never felt more helpless in his life.

At last the beeping of the monitors settled down, and Raze’s father took a deep breath. He didn’t open his eyes, not right then, but Raze realized what was happening nonetheless.

“Shit,” Logan said, confirming Raze’s suspicions, “his implants are starting to work.”

Julian shot Raze a look full of uncertain hope, and Raze forced a smile for his brother’s benefit.
